Sharpening Period - Semester II & IV

Once upon a time there were two wood cutters. In a competition first woodcutter took 6 hours to cut 10 trees. The second woodcutter took 10 hours and cut 6 trees. The latter was obviously surprised at the performance of the former. The second woodcutter was wondering, “I have worked hard and for more duration. I did not even take rest. Even then how could you cut so many trees in so short a time?” The first woodcutter answered, “Altogether I took 3 hours to sharpen my axe while you did not sharpen your axe even once. Without a sharper axe how can you perform better”.

Our students are into II and IV Sem. These are crucial semesters for them. Because II Sem students are preparing for SIP and IV Sem students are preparing to get into the corporate. If they do not sharpen their skills and knowledge they are not going to do better either in SIP or in their first job.

Operational Workouts have been crucial tools in bringing the corporate and the students closer. At this crucial period the faculty members must be very much focused on the sector preferences of the students for their SIP and Jobs. Preferences should be in proper alignment with the knowledge and ability of the students. Automobile sector may not work for a student who says, “I am crazy for bikes”. Just craze may not take a person long. Adequate knowledge about the sector is very important. The only way to ensure this is to assign the students with the Operation Workouts which are related to their related sector. By doing these exercises their way to the jobs or SIP companies would be easier and focused.

Thus:
• Sector preferences of the students must be noted by the faculty members
• Students of IV Semester should be given the OW’s which involve the analysis of the companies and sectors, since; they have already gone through SIP.
• Students of II Semester should be given OW’s which are like ground works before they get into SIP.
• SPA’s are still one step ahead for the II Semester students, they would be able to work on target based assignments and to earn performance based incentives

Let’s work together to help the students in sharpening the axes. One semester’s sharpening can take them long way.

ANKUR as Ice-breaker

At the time of launch of ANKUR, that marked a gateway to what INC means to offer every management education aspiring student, Mr.Gopinath, Manager-Training announced to all

..."Management education is primarily an art of 'facilitating minds'. If right energy in a participatory format is facilitated, young minds areconfigured to a preparatory frame.

Let us start the NEW BATCH SEM 1 with a Big Bang event!

To mark the auspicious occasion, T&P in collaboration with Academics, Marketing, Accounts and Projects Department is enabling all INC Centers in staging a day-long Management Fest titled Appreciation ofNew Key Interventions in Learning (ANKUR 2007) at the respective INC Centers on 02 July 2007. Ankur is the culmination of the Preparatory sessions from 18 June and a curtain raiser for the mainframe of the Management Program.

This was followed in toto at all Centres, with tremendous student participation.

INC Aluva with guidance from RO Kochi has not missed this opportunity, and converted this moment into an opportunity to evolve an Operation Workout exercise for Semester I students. Let us listen to what they like to say in making ANKUR as the first ground to learn about OW, and its contribution to reinforcing classroom learning.

The beauty of MBA programme lies in the fact that it is the only professional course which gives equal emphasis on the skills and academia for a student. When it comes to INC, the same beauty gets graceful with the continous training of students where they are taught to apply the theory in practice. The message was visibly transmitted to the fresh batch of INC- ALuva with the operation workout on ANKUR.

When the objective of operation workout was told to the new students, they were a bit puzzled about how they can apply the theory in practice when they are only on the edge of finishing up the first chapters of various subjects and don’t know anything about the industry. But they were quite enthusiastic about ANKUR. Almost each one of them was involved with one or the other competion. The same students were in high spirits when along with ANKUR, they finished their OW on the same.

The OW was a collaborative one. All the Faculty Members who taught sem 1 provided the topic which is already taken for them in class. The details of the given topics are as follows:

Faculty Name: Mr.Nandakumar Menon
Course: MM 1
Target Concept: The 4 Ps of marketing , Importance of different utilities
Relevant chapter: 1st -Introduction to marketing

Faculty Name: Ms. Sudarshana Manoj
Course: OB
Target Concept:Role of leadership and motivation in Management Meet
Relevant chapter:General

Faculty Name: Mr.Shibu PJ
Course:FA
Target Concept:The preparation of Trial Balance, Journal entry, Balance Sheet and ledger
Relevant chapter: Capter 1-Accounting for Managers

Faculty Name: Deepak George
Course: El
Target Concept: An analysis of Team work for Ankur program
Relevant chapter:General

Faculty Name:Ms. Manisha Pillai
Course:FM
Target Concept:The role of a Finance Manager
Relevant chapter:Capter 1-introduction to Financial management

The topics of Marketing and OB were aligned with the “product launch” and “Collage”
The softskills topic was to analysis the relevance of team work, an integral part of MBA. The topics for FM and FA were streamlined with the finance available with ANKUR and how the money was utilized. The interest of the students was well reflected in the report and PPT presentations prepared by them. It was indeed a difficult task for Faculty members to choose the best one.

ANKUR - the Day Long management fest and the resultant OW based on the same, is indeed an ice-breaker, for it meant breaking the past mind-set of students [viz listening to lectures and taking down the notes], preparing them for challenges ahead of them as part of INC, and initiating them to realize how theory could be verified with a touch of reality.
